Inner Strength treatment at Mandarin Oriental has the blend ‘Inner Strength’ created by late Geraldine Howard, the late founder of Aromatherapy Associates Aromatherapy, at its heart. Geraldine created the “Inner Strength” blend when she was diagnosed with a very rare form of Eye Cancer in 2011. She wanted “to create a blend to help women find the mental and physical strength to get through tough times—illness, job loss, divorce, bereavement, stress.
The blend has all of Geraldine’s favorites: calming frankincense and vetiver; comforting rose and geranium, for an emotional boost. She called it a “hug in a bottle.”
The ninety minutes Inner Strength treatment at Mandarin Oriental brings together this magical blend with warm compresses, guided breath, and reflexology.
I went for the treatment at MO, Hong Kong a few months back. The hotel beautifully embodies the Oriental details and blends them with artistically in a modern and sleek design. Being centrally located, it is a favourite of luxury and business travellers and the lobby is always flush with the guests activity.
I took the elevator for the spa and was welcomed by the spa manager and handed out the consultation form to fill. After the pre treatment consultation to check for any pain or allergies, I was guided to the relaxation area. I changed into the comfortable bath robe and spent leisurely time indulging in some aqua therapy, enjoying the Eastern fragrant steam and sauna rooms.
My masseur picked up from the wet area and led me to the private treatment room.We started with some simple breathing exercises in which she guided me through some calming breathing techniques, making me forget some of the looming work deadlines and also taught me some relaxation techniques for sound sleep.
Next she went on to make me inhale some hypnotically mind-calming frankincense oil and cleansed my feet with heated mitts – a gesture that somehow made me feel very cared-for.
She rubbed my feet and hands with warm oil, preformed some gentle cranial pressure on my scalp. Then she started to work on my back with the Inner Strength Body Oil in a slow and rhythmical manner to what felt like a deeply nurturing massage.
The massage got me into a stuporous state and I found myself falling in and out of sleep several times. The treatment ended with a gentle face and scalp massage. I lay there in massage bed for some time post the massage to reflect on the slowness of my thoughts and feel the stillness my mind had achieved in the past 90 minutes.
